That Old Familiar Tune……
It’s always special when you hear a song you remember from years past. Pictures are like that too. When I take a family portrait I think about the photo hanging on your wall, evoking that same feeling that you have when you hear a past favorite tune. It takes you back to that place and time.
My name is Kelly Brooks, and I’ve been an artist my whole life. Growing up in the south, I was always surrounded with creativity. From attending the various art festivals that the Houston, Texas area had to offer, to my dad being a cartoonist and a painter. My mother was a writer and never at a loss of words, written or spoken! I was taught to look at things creatively and to think outside the box. We always had some kind of a project going on from making God’s eyes, dream catchers, gold leaf glass pictures, decoupage and more. Crafty, I know, but it was all the rage….back then.
When I had my three children, I continued to create. I painted window murals for their school building and transformed the library into themes from books. I also painted their bedrooms with scenes from a rain forest, or whatever theme they wanted at the time.
Then I discovered the power of the camera lens. We were all on vacation and one of my daughters put the cherry from her drink on the deck railing. I pulled out my camera and photographed the cherry, tilted slightly and resting in a small puddle from the ice chips that had melted down from it under the hot Caribbean sun. It created a sensation among my friends, who all wanted copies. This was my transition point. I discovered I wanted to create more with my photography as opposed to just documenting our life events.
I started clicking the shutter at other subjects — people, animals, plant life, architecture – and I discovered that the lens is really an eye that glimpses what’s underneath: inner beauty. It’s the great joy of this art form. I love photography! Amazing moments happen! Let me capture them so you can enjoy them for years to come.
